We had an exciting week!  First, Dave and Peggy (of the super-secret spirit-animal conjuring committee) dubbed Cass the Mongoose President due, in part, to her penchant for aggressively vanquishing venomous snakes.  Then, this weekend, the colony got together to do some good by helping maintain the Oak Park Rotary House.  We got to meet the current residents and learned that Alice has some mad gardening skills!  Then, out for brunch!

Our speaker was Susan Nelson from Junior Achievement.  If you’ll recall, Cass chose J.A. to receive a $500.00 donation from our club foundation.  J.A. teaches children to be smart about money matters.  Did you know that 60% of kids today don’t think they’ll be economically self-sufficient by age 24, and that 1 in 4 college students acquires more debt than they can pay off?  Junior Achievement has many programs designed to change this.

They serve 11 million students worldwide, including 4.5 million here in the U.S. and over 12,000 in our area. They provide work readiness programs, teach soft skills like reliability and teamwork, and generally teach kids to own their economic future.

People interested in helping can volunteer to lead programs in various schools – all of the curriculum and training is provided by Junior Achievement!

On September 13, we welcomed District Governor Barbara Tracy to our club. Barbara was joined by her husband Jim, AKA the District Governor’s Detail Man, and ADG JR Springer. The night before, our club board had a chance to tell Barbara all the wonderful things our small club accomplishes, and our breakfast meeting gave Barbara a chance to share her goals and vision for the district with us.

Our speaker was Jonathan Guttman, who just returned to the states after spending his senior year in Germany as part of the Congress Bundestag in Bocholt for the year, attending a German high school, which really helped him learn German.

Oak Park Rotary House

Our Club is a participant with six other Rotary Clubs to provide and maintain a house in the Oak Park area of Sacramento. Rotary House is a free single family two bedroom, one bath, temporary residence for the use of a family whose child is under care at UCD Medical Center.

Our club does outside maintenance for Rotary House every few months - one of many hands-on projects we're involved with.

Sacramento Breakfast won 3rd best in the small club category at the 2016 District 5180 Conference in Berkeley this past weekend. President Kary led an RCSB contingent that included district governor elect-elect and nearly almost elected Sandi, deputy district sergeant-at-arms Deb, and newbie Adrian. Hey, no wonder we are #3! Congratulations to the badger and his team for a job well done! The award serves as a good reminder of the many good things we do.

The Breakfast Clubbers sat down to fancy-shmancy eggs benedict for President Kary Moore's inaugural meeting, which he kicked off with much fanfare and laughter.  Amidst a procession of glorious banners rivaling any medieval jousting tournament, Kary welcomed his first official speaker, stand-up comedian Carlos Rodriguez.  What a way to start the day!

But, beneath the atmosphere of frivolity and fun, an identity crisis was brewing. . .
