Our speaker was Jonathan Guttman, who just returned to the states after spending his senior year in Germany as part of the Congress Bundestag in Bocholt for the year, attending a German high school, which really helped him learn German. We were all pretty impressed that he came back nearly fluent, since he didn’t know any German when he left California! But after only 3 weeks of intense study, he was able to help an elderly couple navigate the train on one of his 2 hour trips back and forth from the language school.

Jonathan says he learned a lot during his year abroad, including, of course, how German! He also said that he learned to be more flexible. He had to adapt to a different culture and new ways of doing things. He feels that’s he’s become much more independent, too. He traveled a lot while he was studying, He’s definitely got the travel bug and hopes to return to Europe again, possibly as part of a college exchange program.

Soon, Jonathan will be setting off again, this time for his freshman year at Tulane University in New Orleans. He's the winner of multiple year Speech Contests sponsored by the club and was an active member of Interact at Rio Americano Hight School before heading off to Germany for a year. He thanked us for taking such an interest in him over the years, and promised to keep in touch. Good luck, Jonathan! We’re proud of you!
